You may think that forestry equipment is only for cutting down trees, but it can actually be used at every stage of the forestry process to make things easier. If you’d like to know more about forestry equipment uses, check out this guide from the experts at Pete’s Equipment Sales & Rentals, Inc.

Cutting Down Trees

A person who is responsible for cutting down trees is traditionally called the feller, while the person who places the felled trees into a stack is called the buncher. The modern piece of forestry equipment called the feller buncher combines both functions into one by grabbing trees, cutting them off at their base, and stacking them together.

Processing Trees

Once the trees have been cut down and stacked together, they’ll need to be delimbed and bucked (turned into logs). Some people use dedicated delimbing machines, while others delimb the trees by hand. Similarly, bucking can be done either with a chainsaw or with a dedicated machine. Harvesters are designed to delimb and buck trees in addition to performing the work of a feller buncher, though the added complexity makes them a bit more expensive.

Transportation

Whether you’re transporting trees that have already been processed into logs or bringing the trees to an area where they can be processed, you have multiple options. Yarders, skidders, and forwarders all offer different methods of transporting the wood, so do some research to determine which model best fits your needs.

Clearing the Land

Responsible forestry means clearing the land so that more trees can be planted and the cycle can continue. Various grinders, chippers, and mulchers all offer different ways to safely and efficiently get rid of unwanted limbs and stumps.
